COSTA DEL MARESME - MALGRAT DE MAR |
 |
 |
| The Costa del Maresme (Costa de Barcelona) in Catalonia, between the regions of Barcelonès and La Selva, is, in geographic terms, a strip of land located between the mountains -what is known as the ‘precoastal’ mountain range (serralada prelitoral)-, and the sea. The capital of the Costa del Maresme (Costa de Barcelona) is Mataró, a city with a long tradition in industry and services, in an area comprising a total of 30 towns and villages. |
In the region, there are three differentiated areas. On the one hand, the Alto Maresme (Higher Maresme), comprising the towns of Tordera, Palafolls, Malgrat de Mar, Santa Susanna, Pineda, Calella, Sant Cebrià de Vallalta, Sant Iscle de Vallalta, Sant Pol de Mar, Canet de Mar, Arenys de Mar and Arenys de Munt.
On the other hand, the Mataró area, which comprises all the towns closest to the capital. And lastly, the Bajo Maresme (Lower Maresme), extending from Vilassar to Montgat.
The Alto Maresme, where Malgrat de Mar is located, has different historical characteristics from the other two areas, mostly due to the fact that it belongs more to the area of influence of Girona than to that of Mataró or Barcelona.
The town of Malgrat de Mar, with approximately 17,000 inhabitants and a surface area of some 8.9 km², is located on the Northern edge of the province of Barcelona, exactly between the southernmost part of the Costa Brava and the northernmost part of the Costa del Maresme (Costa de Barcelona). Malgrat de Mar has a sea front of coarse golden sand beaches stretching for almost 5 km.
Malgrat de Mar is in the Northeast of the province of Barcelona, and is bordered by Blanes to the East, Palafolls to the North, Santa Susanna to the West and the Mediterranean Sea to the South. The River Tordera marks the border with the municipality of Blanes, separates the provinces of Barcelona and Girona and flows into the Mediterranean, forming a delta. Besides dividing administrative regions, the river divides the functional space of the Lower Tordera.
This beach has been receiving this award, which distinguishes the quality of beaches and of the services they offer, since 1998. The beach of Malgrat de Mar offers all types of services: showers, access ramps, walkways, toilets, beach guard service, among others. In addition, this beach is equipped with all the necessary services for disabled access, including parking spaces. The beach of Malgrat de Mar is easy to get to. It is located next to the train station and near two car parks, the Sindicato car park and the car park on Abad Oliba Street. |

COSTA DEL MARESME (COSTA DE BARCELONA) |
| The Costa del Maresme (Costa de Barcelona) is the name of the coastal strip stretching 50 km long and 10 km wide from Montgat to the river Tordera. It used to be known as the Costa del Llevant. In the North, the Coastal Mountain Range separates it from Vallès Oriental; to the East, it borders with La Selva and to the West, with Barcelonés. |

Protected from the Northern winds by the Coastal Mountain Range, the region has become a leading residential area and tourism destination, thanks to its mild climate, the Mediterranean light of the landscape and its ideal geographic location. The tallest mountain of the Coastal Mountain Range, running parallel to the coast, outlining the lush landscape in the background and offering visitors stunning spots and views, is Montnegre, with a height of 759 m. under Colina de Vives, also called Montnegre de Ponent. The rest of the mountain range, a series of 400 m peaks and gentle slopes – the highest point is the Corredor mountain range (632 m.) –shelters the various valleys where the Mediaeval villages which would later give rise to the coastal towns settled.
In the interior, there are some locations, such as Vallalta, Hortsavinyà, Vallmanya, Soberanos or Valle de Alfatà, where the orography has formed water basins. The vegetation is very similar to that of the region of La Selva, with a strong population of carob trees in the Higher Maresme. In the Maresme region, in addition to the traditional agricultural activity, focused above all on vine growing, flower production and fruit and vegetable growing (the strawberries from this area are famous), there is also a strong textile and knitting industry. Fishing is concentrated around Arenys de Mar, the fourth largest fishing port in Catalonia.
Between the mouth of the River Tordera and the plateau that closes off the beach of Calella, the coast has an almost uninterrupted 12 kilometre stretch of wide beaches.
Between Calella and Sant Andreu de Llavaneres, however, the foothills of the mountain range form smaller beaches, equally apt for bathing and practising water sports. The beaches have clean, coarse sand and are gently sloping, allowing bathers easy access to the water.
The main tourism sites and residential areas, all very well equipped, have settled around the coastal villages, some of them fishing village, others famous for their crafts and others industrial villages, making tourism the region’s main source of income. |
